“Let’s stop lying to our students”

Implementing modelling in science classes.

What do you expect students to know about the electron?  Have you ever explained the role of the capacitor?  What did you expect the student to know about the intestine?  Have you hung intestines across the classroom ceiling?  What do you expect students to know about chemical reactions?  Have you blown up the science lab?

This session we will look into students generating their own models and allow them to understand a consensual scientific model.   Models we will look at in this session will include the atomic model and states of matter.

The details for this workshop are here.

Workshop participants will create their own models from food, found materials and computer simulations.  The presenters are John Widmer and David Lu with a combined classroom teaching experience of 40 years.  They are also foundation members of the Mag-Net Online Association.
