Measuring Distance

Speed is a mixed unit calculation.   This is a difficult concept for many students, and adults! Time is measured by the computer, but the distance is measured in two different ways.

  • One way to measure distance is the run the car over a set distance.  Measuring time is a problem if you don't have a set distance, and acceleration calculations become impossible.

  • Another way to calculate distance is to count the number of wheel rotations. Data cars 1 to 5 are using this method by measuring the number of slots, 20, that pass in a measured time.
  • We could also measure the distance travelled by using an ultrasonic sensor.

And of course we could use a GPS detection .. as real cars do .. but we are inside .. and the fumes are dangerous!
